Batteries need to be disposed of properly, or the toxic chemicals they contain can leach into our land and groundwater.
Stores that sell rechargeable batteries must take them back for recycling; call 311 for more information on this new law.
Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation’s Call2Recycle Program: Many retailers in NYC accept rechargeable batteries and cell phones for recycling. See http://www.rbrc.org/call2recycle.
Button batteries: Ask jewelry stores, watch repair shops, camera stores, and other retailers to recycle your watch, calculator, or other button batteries. Though not required to, many do.
